The Lightning

Welcome to the Home of the HHBA Lighting! We are a competitive homeschool basketball organization serving Harrisonburg, VA and surrounding communities. We train hard, have fun, and keep our priorities straight.

Our Organization

Harrisonburg Homeschool Basketball Association was established in 2018 as a way to bring competitive, yet God honoring, basketball to Harrisonburg, VA. We currently offer a Middle School boys basketball team and will add a JV/V boys basketball team in the spring of 2020. If we have enough interest, we will start a girls 4th/5th grade team in the spring of 2019. We are always open to offering other teams as needs arise. We operate as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and are able to accept tax deductible donations and sponsorships.

Founder Lane Lockard was born and raised in Anchorage, AK and moved to the Shenandoah Valley in 2012 with his wife, Angela, and three kids, Jacob, Jackson, and Cadence. Lane’s passion for basketball and love of kids compelled him to start HHBA. He played 4 years of college basketball and was the assistant women’s coach at Biola University for 2 years. His sons, Jacob and Jackson currently play on the middle school team.

How We Began

Our journey began when Jackson started getting the basketball bug at the beginning of 2018. He hadn’t played much but managed to make an AAU team. Up to that point, he wasn’t interested in receiving a lot of my instruction so I stayed out of his basketball training. After his AAU experience, he realized that he was behind and that he wanted to start training to catch up. We knew that recreation leagues weren’t going to cut it and we weren’t excited about AAU. That’s when I had the idea to start a homeschool team. It had been in the back of my mind for a few years after visiting with a Richmond team at a homeschool conference. I started floating the idea at church and online and found enough kids to start a team.

The 2018-2019 season was quite an adventure. We had very little experience (many of our players having never played) and we lost almost every game. We really improved but were still learning how to play and weren’t quite up to level yet. What a difference a year can make! We’ve turned into a pretty solid team in 2019 and have won several games. We look back on our first games together and have to laugh. It’s been a lot of fun seeing the kids mature. They’ve worked really hard on their skills and are playing really well together.

Mission

Our mission is to bring homeschoolers a competitive basketball opportunity beyond what the recreation leagues can offer. We also look to be an alternative to AAU basketball because of its Sunday tournaments and night practices—which take away from family and church commitments. We try to keep things intense, encouraging, and fun. Our philosophy is to focus on individual skills, great effort, and team work. We teach kids how to play basketball with man defense and motion offense—which will give them the base they need to execute more advanced tactics as they mature.

If you are interested in joining HHBA please send us an email (lanelockard23@gmail.com) or give us a call (540-810-9949). As of now, we don’t have formal tryouts. We just have you come out to a practice or two so that we can see if you are interested in our program and so that we can see if we think you will be a good fit.
